Jo Williams Ceramics

About me, Jo Williams.

Hi, I'm Jo Williams and I'm a potter and I work from my little studio in New Brighton on the Wirral.

I've been making ceramics for 35 years and my obsession has never wavered. I mainly throw on the potters wheel now although I love making big coil pots when time allows and I constantly experiment by using new materials and firing them so that I continue to learn and progress.

I currently make contemporary functional decorative ceramics using white, grogged earthenware clay. Most of my work is made on the potters wheel, then the outer surface is scuffed to create a velvety texture, then oxides are applied before firing. I glaze the inside in a soft contrasting glaze while the surface fires to an inky finish. I enjoy playing with pattern and mark making but continue to experiment with different materials to apply to the clay surface. Its exciting to experiment with different materials, clay bodies and firing temperatures and its an aspect of making ceramics that will never leave me.

I also run workshops from home, to teach people how to make, or glaze or workshops can be tailered to your needs. Workshops are a great way to find out if you have the skill and mindset to become a potter. Working with clay is messy but also very rewarding in lots of ways.
